Each Resista® elm has an implanted chip/transponder

Every Resista® elm is unique because the breeder has implanted an electronic chip as soon as the elm has reached 4 years of age. The year after implantation this chip is buried in the wood and cannot be seen any longer from the outside. The electronical reader, however, will find the chip even after 20 years without any problem. Thus every Resista® elm can be securely identified. The system has been developed by AEG-Systems of Ulm/Germany. Since 2003 every Resista® elm has an individual 10 digit chip. Prospect for the future: With these chips an elegant way of registering trees in a city has been found.

pruning

It is important to prune the trees before planting. Normally a more rigorous pruning is better than no pruning. It makes a difference wether the trees are delivered bare-rooted, rootballed or in a container.

pictures 1-3 show one of nine trees of the variety 'New Horizon' which were planted in spring 2003 with a girth of 16-18 cm and which were pruned very rigorously.

rapidity of growth

Resista® elms grow very fast.

The Ulmus 'New Horizon' (left) and Tilia cordata (right) have been planted at the same time in 2000 at Schönberg (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) with a girth of 16-18 cm. The upper picture shows the trees in June 2005.

The second picture shows the trees in July 2007. The elm had reached a girth of 60 cm whereas the lime trees just got to 30 cm.
